"Sun & Moon" is the latest solo project by Cheng Chun, WU. The project consists of four compositions: <卯> (Mǎo, Dawn), <午> ( Wǔ, Noon), <酉> (Yǒu , Twilight), and <子> ( Zi, Midnight), representing different moments throughout the day, from the artist's awakening to the conclusion of a performance. Opening with Mǎo, the composition portrays the tranquility and purity of dawn, utilizing overtone singing to create a sense of spatial depth, accompanied by traditional Taiwanese instruments such as the work songs and erhu to awaken the earth and begin the day. Wǔ depicts vitality and activity, featuring the energetic rhythms of the West African djembe drum, enhanced by the natural sound and spatial effects, highlighting overtones and incorporating synthesizer elements to evoke a vibrant and lively musical atmosphere. Yǒu signifies the time of rest, with the introduction of the thumb piano creating a relaxing atmosphere, interweaving improvisational elements from Taiwanese Beijing opera, including spoken dialogue, thumb piano, and hand cymbals, building tension and concluding the day. Finally, Zi represents the gradual transition into chaos, with the melodies played on the flute and erhu, accompanied by a steady rhythm from the Indian drum, creating a swirling and ethereal ambiance, expressing the inner thoughts of the artist. This composition portrays the flow of thoughts and emotions experienced during moments of insomnia, using the erhu and flute to convey a sense of fluidity, enhanced by spatial effects that create a vast atmosphere. "Sun & Moon" combines elements of world percussion, instruments, and traditional Taiwanese opera music, offering a unique interpretation of time, nature, and the artist's inner state. It also serves as Cheng Chun, WU's first glimpse into his personal life, allowing the audience to experience the power of music in everyday life.
