A Root is a fusion band rooted in Taiwanese culture; their composition transforms cultural traditions into musical narratives with a combination of traditional instruments and inspirations from the environment and space. Crossing the realms of traditional opera and ballads, jazz, and improvisation, A Root has a unique position in the contemporary music scene. The video contains highlights of A Root’s works, performances, and exchanges over the years. Their first album Rooty Mental is a series of sound poems inspired by the landscapes of their hometown Yilan. Through leaving and returning home, the musicians embark on a journey in search of their identity and roots. A Root’s recent works combine Taiwanese stories of supernatural beings and ballads from the oral tradition; incorporating the human voice and chanting, they seek to disrupt and rebuild traditional Taiwanese music while unearthing its wild and untamed side. The crossover, fusion, and restructuring of music are merely parts of the transformation where music is reborn and becomes a new tradition.
